4 Reasons Why You Should Add Cherries To Your Diet

When I was a child, I used to climb up trees every spring to summer. Sweet cherries were my favorites, and I remember there was a year when I didn’t let a day pass without eating at least a handful of them.

Today, I still enjoy them just as much, but I honestly tell you that I miss the climbing-the-trees-to-gather-them part.

In the hope you haven’t given up that habit yet, you should learn about its curative properties.

Cherries’ Secret Weapons

1. Relieves the pain and discomfort related to arthritis.

A couple of studies (and also some of my patients) have confirmed that cherries can decrease the levels of uric acid in people who have gout or arthritis issues. 1

Two cups every couple of days are just enough to get you going, and the good news is that the effects are the same for fresh and frozen cherries (so you can consume them all year-long).

2. Prevents and combats cancer.

Although there is no widely-available, scientifically-proven treatment for cancer, there are lots of foods that can help you prevent it, or even alleviate the symptoms associated with it.

The reasoning is simple – cancer is caused by malfunctioning cells that have been damaged by free radicals.

The flavonoids that cherries contain – and in good amounts – are classified as antioxidants because their main purpose is to fight the free radicals that weaken your cells. 2

3. Provides a natural cardioprotection.

Besides the “superheroes” they are (thanks to the large content of antioxidants), cherries are also a great source of potassium.

This mineral and sodium need to be in proper balance for the blood to run smoothly through your veins.

Unfortunately, sodium (or simply “salt”) is named on the ingredient list of all the foods we find in the market, and this disturbs the above-mentioned balance.

The same two cups of cherries eaten every couple of days counteracts the effects, at least partially, normalizing your blood pressure. 3

4. Makes you sleep like a baby.

One of the reasons it’s worth including cherries in your diet is that they increase the production of melatonin, the hormone that regulates sleep.

Drinking a glass of cherry juice four hours before going to bed will help you fall asleep much easier.

I don’t recommend it sooner because cherries also contain sugar (energy), and this can lead to the exact opposite effect. 4
