Do you know which are the worst foods for your brain’s health?
A patient recently wanted to know what should he avoid and when I started listing him the possible options, he was left confused:
“But that’s in basically everything I eat at home!”
The American Diet is now renowned worldwide for how unhealthy it is. And nobody can say otherwise since our country is plagued by obesity.
The importance of nutrition is vital when it comes to wellness and weight loss. This was known since ancient times and I must agree with Hippocrates on this:
“Let food be your medicine and medicine be your food.”
But is the food or drinks you consume healthy for your brain?
Take a look at what you should avoid.
Dangerous Foods and Drinks for Brain Health
The White Poison
This substance is highly addictive and can give you severe withdrawals once you want to get off it. It’s three times more addictive than cocaine.
Can you guess what it is?
You’ve probably put a few spoons of it in your coffee this morning. Or perhaps ate a donut glazed with it.
Yes, this seemingly innocent white powder is responsible for so much harm:
- Promotes Weight Gain
- Feeds Fungus and Tumor Cells
- Declines Brain Health (Dementia)
- Triggers Type 2 Diabetes
- Weakens the Immune System
The more sugar you eat or allow to have in your diet, the more health issues you will have.
But sugar is not only found in obvious places. Sometimes there’s too much sugar in your ketchup and mustard!
Here is a comprehensive list of all foods and drinks you didn’t know companies were adding tones sugar -> Sugar and Cocaine – What Do They Have in Common?
It can be hard to let go of excess sugar. After all, it’s in basically everything we eat and drink. However, I found the best solution for this!
Public Enemy – Refined Carbs
Don’t get me wrong, carbs are important for a healthy body and they generate energy.
However, refined carbs are something else. These foods are high on the glycemic index. Which means that your body digests them the fastest and this may cause a rise in your blood sugar and insulin levels.
If you suffer from diabetes, then you know exactly what I am talking about.
Research has suggested that eating just one meal with a high glycemic load causes severe brain impairment to both children and adults.
It seems that people who tend to eat them more often have memory impairments.
Seniors who have a diet consisting of mainly these type of foods are 5 times more at risk of having dementia.
So, what should you avoid?
Sugar and highly processed grains like white flour. There are plenty of other healthy alternatives.
Take-Out No More
I say this knowing how hard it is to stop ordering take out.
I used to always order food because my life was in a word – busy.
With kids running around, going to work and doing research, it was more than a challenge.
But as I was doing my research, I realized how unhealthy my lifestyle came to be. And it got to me. I was tired and grumpy all the times. Couldn’t focus too much on something and even my health started to decline.
Fortunately, I have an amazing wife (most of us do) and we agreed to make a change for the better.
We started cooking 2-4 times a week.
And the results were amazing!
You see, most foods that are ready-made or ordered contain hydrogenated vegetable oils.
Although the science behind this is still inconclusive, it has been proven that some people are more sensitive to it and experience:
- Increased inflammation
- Lowered cognitive levels
- Memory problems
And the worst part, they are more at risk of suffering from Alzheimer’s.
So, what can you do?
Ditch margarine, frosting, snack foods, ready-made cakes and prepackaged cookies.
Instead, you can make your own and they will also help you lose weight -> 7 Low-Calorie Mouth-Watering Desserts You Must Try
