Almond Milk – A better alternative to cow milk or other non-milk products?

The industrialization of food in the U.S. has unfortunately ruined the quality and nutritional value of many foods, especially cow milk.

Because of this, manufacturers have tried to please the masses by producing non-cow milk alternatives like:

  • Coconut milk
  • Almond milk
  • Soy milk
  • Hemp milk
  • Pea milk
  • Rice milk..

Here’s my two cents about coconut milk -> Coconut Milk vs Coconut Water – The Truth Behind Dishonest Commercials

But are these alternatives any better than the latter?

If you take a look on the labels, most of them contain a lot of sugar, added preservatives and synthetic minerals and vitamins.

Also, if you have a lactose intolerance or suffer from stomach issues like flatulence and bloating, a no-cow milk alternative might be the best choice for you.

Furthermore, recent research shows that cow milk doesn’t help you protect your bones from osteoporosis->

Therefore, since cow milk cannot provide you with the calcium that can prevent osteoporosis, then a healthier alternative is actually called for.

And this is where almond milk comes into play. Depending on the brand, almond milk has much more to offer you than the rest. A serving of almond milk contains:

  • 50% more calcium than cow’s milk
  • 30 calories
  • 5g fat
  • 45% DV calcium
  • 25% DV vitamin D
  • 20% DV of vitamin E
  • Traces of riboflavin, vitamin B12 and zinc

The only downside is that people with nut allergies cannot have it and that it only has 1g of proteins (less than 8 g like cow’s milk).

A pretty small price to pay considering how beneficial it is for your health.

But there is a way you can make it even better…

Make Your Own Homemade Almond Milk

You see, manufactures try to make almond milk look so much like cow milk, that it strips away all of its beneficial health properties. Not to mention all the preservatives and chemicals that they add to the mix.

However, if you prepare it yourself, you’ll have way more to gain from it – health wise since almond milk can help you:

  • Control Blood Sugar Levels – This delicious alternative to cow milk is perfect if you suffer from diabetes since it does not contain added sugars and its carbohydrate content is low.
  • Have a healthy heart – because it is very rich in good fats.
  • Rejuvenate skin – since a cup of almond milk provides you with 50% of your vitamin E daily requirement.

Homemade Almond Milk Recipe

Here’s what you need to make a mouthwatering and nutritious almond milk:

  • 500 g of almonds (or more depending on how much almond milk you want to make)
  • Vanilla extract
  • Blender
  • A cloth for straining

Now, first you must soak the almonds in water for 8 hours. Next, simply put them in the blender with a bit of water and vanilla extract (to taste).

Extra tip: You don’t have to throw away what remains on the cloth after straining. You can still use it in different meals. Get creative!
